My name is Biancia Jones. I am a mother of three young men; grandmother to a lovely, rambunctious 7-year-old granddaughter; and a proud alum of Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing!
I’ve been in the medical field for almost 20 years, 11 with BJC HealthCare — and counting! I started as a medical assistant, and, while I loved it, I really wanted to move to the next level in my career and spend more time with patients. I am now one year into my career as a clinical II nurse on the inpatient surgical floor at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, and I love what I do. I care for patients both before and after their surgical procedures and try to bring them joy, laughter, and a caring hand along the way.
While I use every piece of knowledge I gained from Goldfarb daily, I’m sometimes surprised how often I leverage mental health strategies to help patients. As a student, I struggled to understand these concepts until a professor really took me under her wing to mentor me. I learned so much from her that I was able to pay it forward by tutoring others in that class too. Now, I use those skills daily and even work with some of the students I tutored. I am still a go-to for them if they have questions or concerns, which makes me smile — feel so lucky to be able to transfer our relationship as Goldfarb students to our jobs.
So many people have encouraged me and helped me get to where I am today. I cannot put into words how grateful I am for the scholarships and awards I received thanks to the generosity of donors. This support enabled me to graduate from Goldfarb and launch a meaningful nursing career. And I am happy to report that I plan to pursue my master's degree and become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, filling critical patient care needs in our hospitals!
Nurses are multifaceted, compassionate, and caring individuals. As nurses, we listen to and advocate for patients. We are family when some patients do not have any. We take care of our patients and their loved ones as well. Nurses are the backbone of health care.
I am very proud to be a nurse.
