The Power of Giving

Advancements in cancer prevention, therapies, and outcomes are driven by innovative research. Gifts power the wheel of cancer innovation, translating promising ideas into new standards of care.

Extraordinary care means our patients have access to the most innovative treatments, technologies, and expertise when it matters most. Gifts provide real-time solutions that directly improve a patient’s journey.

Academic medical centers have the honored responsibility of training the next generation of physician-scientists. Gifts foster a culture of continuous education and training, fueling the cycle of cancer innovation.

Many personal and socioeconomic barriers outside the hospital can impact a patient’s overall healing process and access to care. Gifts create a holistic and personalized approach to cancer that meet people where they are with premiere care designed to treat the entire person—beyond the hospital walls in our community and throughout the world.

Making a Difference When and Where It Matters Most

Generous donors provide vital support to meet the greatest needs and highest priorities of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, its patients, its partners, and the community it serves.

Philanthropic support sustains our caregiver workforce, invests in innovation and discovery, and extends care into our community, leading to exceptional care for all. Here are a few ways compassionate generosity has come together recently to support exceptional care and make Barnes-Jewish Hospital a pillar of the community.

Reducing Readmission Through Local Rehabilitation

Work is underway to improve health outcomes for cardiac patients and reduce hospital readmissions by making cardiac rehabilitation available at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The program will provide nearly 10,000 cardiac rehab sessions annually, supporting better access to care for hundreds of patients during their recoveries from a major cardiac event.

Donor support is helping to fill a critical care need for cardiovascular patients by making this high-quality, evidence-based cardiovascular rehabilitation program available at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Building a Nursing Workforce

Nurses are essential to the strength and future of health care, and Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing is committed to advancing this critical workforce. With more than 20 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, Goldfarb prepares nurses to lead and serve across care settings. Nearly 80% of students rely on financial aid to pursue their educations.

Philanthropic support makes it possible to expand access and prepare the next generation of nurses to improve the health of our communities for years to come.

Safely and Efficiently Advancing Discovery

Cancer patients in a clinical trial are experiencing a reduction in office visits as a result of the important work conducted by Stephanie Markovina, MD, PhD, a WashU Medicine radiation oncologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. As part of a study to improve immunotherapy, Dr. Markovina is also identifying opportunities to safely and effectively rearrange treatment for patients, repurposing blood tests received as the standard of care, and proactively scheduling certain exams or procedures to occur when a patient is already in the office.

Generous donors help advance research for better treatments and improve patient care around the world.

Promoting Preventative Care Among Aging Adults

Older adults in north St. Louis County have access to free and low-cost community health programs that promote lifelong learning, physical and mental wellness, technology literacy, and civic engagement through Oasis Institute. Oasis is an important intervention that is working to increase health and wellness in neighborhoods where life expectancies have been significantly lower than surrounding neighborhoods.

Donor support enables BJC HealthCare to partner with Oasis to connect more than 400 older adults to programs that improve their health and safety, increase self-confidence and social well-being, and ultimately reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations.
